Strengthening Mahama Refugees and Host Community’s Capacity to Enhance Low Carbon Technologies and Climate Resilient Worth Solutions for Livelihood Improvement in Kirehe

Project Description

The project titled “Strengthening Mahama refugees and host community’s capacity to enhance low carbon technologies and climate resilient worth solutions for livelihood improvement in Kirehe District” is being implemented by REDO in partnership with JAC Trust. The main objective of the project is to promote the use of briquettes as a clean, affordable, and environmentally friendly alternative for cooking. Briquettes are made from compressed organic materials and offer a sustainable energy source that helps reduce deforestation, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and minimize household air pollution. This initiative focuses on empowering both refugee and host communities in Mahama Sector by building their capacity to adopt and promote low carbon technologies. Through awareness campaigns, technical support, and local engagement, the project seeks to improve livelihoods while contributing to climate change mitigation and resilience. Briquettes offer a practical solution for reducing dependency on firewood, saving household expenses, and improving indoor air quality.

Achievements

Since the project began in August 2024, significant milestones have been achieved. Two cooperatives one from the refugee camp and one from the host community have been identified to participate in briquette production activities. These cooperatives are expected to generate income while also supporting sustainable energy practices. A briquette production site has been legally identified with support from Kirehe District authorities, and briquette production machines have been fully installed and are ready to begin operations. Community mobilization sessions were conducted with cooperative members to explain the goals and impact of the project. During these sessions, members expressed their commitment to participate by collecting raw materials, promoting the use of briquettes in their communities, and adopting the product in their own homes. This project is seen as a valuable initiative in reducing pressure on natural resources, improving environmental outcomes, and supporting household savings by reducing firewood expenses.
