Promoting Social Cohesion through Climate Awareness in Refugee and Hosting Communities in Mahama Sector, Rwanda

Project Description

REDO, in partnership with MECCE, conducted a survey titled “Promoting Social Cohesion Through Climate Awareness in Refugee and Hosting Communities in Mahama Sector, Rwanda.” The aim of this initiative was to understand community perceptions of climate change and related environmental issues in both refugee and host populations, and to explore how inclusive approaches can strengthen social cohesion and climate awareness. The survey used one-on-one interviews and focus group discussions to collect qualitative data on people’s experiences, knowledge, and attitudes toward climate change. These tools helped gather personal insights as well as stimulate group dialogue around key environmental topics, enabling REDO to develop targeted community awareness and engagement strategies. The work builds on REDO’s previous efforts in the region, especially the 2022 project “Sustainable Landscape Management for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation around Mahama Refugee Camp.”

Achievements

The project successfully conducted a four-day survey with the participation of 120 individuals from both the refugee camp and the host community in Mahama Sector. A total of 100 one-on-one interviews were carried out, evenly split between refugees and host community members, while 20 participants took part in four focus group discussions that encouraged open and engaging dialogue on climate change issues. The survey revealed that participants from the host community were aware of REDO’s previous interventions, including the distribution of improved cookstoves and agroforestry trees, which have helped reduce dependence on firewood and promote sustainable cooking practices. Refugee participants also demonstrated strong environmental awareness, particularly in waste management and the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) for clean cooking. These findings highlight a growing level of climate awareness among community members, while also indicating a continued need for education, mobilization, and awareness-raising to strengthen climate resilience and ensure long-term sustainability.
