Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture for Food Security and Climate Resilience in Bugesera district

Project description

The Promoting Climate Smart Agriculture for Food Security and Climate Resilience in Bugesera District project is implemented by the Rural Environment and Development Organization (REDO) with funding support from Rwanda Green Fund (FONERWA) in partnership with Bugesera district. This initiative aims to restore degraded landscapes, improve agricultural productivity, and enhance community resilience to climate change. The project will restore 100 hectares of land with tree cover and plant 60,000 trees, including 30,000 fruit trees and 30,000 agroforestry species, to promote sustainable land use and increase household incomes. The project is being implemented in collaboration with two farmer cooperatives and will benefit 600 people, including 360 women, ensuring inclusive participation in all activities. Capacity building is a key component of the program, with 45 trainers of 215 farmers receiving training in climate smart agriculture practices, including conservation farming, soil fertility improvement, agroforestry techniques, and efficient water use strategies. To strengthen irrigation access, solar powered irrigation systems will be installed and irrigating on 15 hectares of farmland to reduce dependence on rain fed agriculture and increase year round crop production. In addition, the project provides training to farmers on post-harvest handling techniques to minimize losses and preserve the quality of their produce. Through practices such as grading, sorting, packaging, and proper storage, farmers will be equipped with essential skills to maintain food quality and ensure the availability of nutritious produce throughout the year. This will further contribute to improved food security and increased market value of agricultural products. By combining land restoration, modern farming technologies, irrigation improvements, and comprehensive farmer training, the project strengthens food security, enhances climate resilience, and promotes sustainable livelihoods for farming communities in Bugesera District. The focus on cooperative engagement, gender inclusion, and long term capacity development ensures that the project will generate lasting environmental and socioeconomic benefits.

Achivements

The project has made strong progress toward restoring productive landscapes and building climate resilience in Bugesera District. Significant achievements include the restoration of 100 hectares of land with tree cover and the planting of 60,000 trees, comprising 30,000 fruit trees and 30,000 agroforestry species that support soil conservation and livelihood improvement. Working closely with two farmer cooperatives, the project has directly benefited 600 people, including 360 women, who actively participate in all project activities. Capacity building efforts have trained 45 trainers and 215 farmers in climate smart agriculture, equipping them with skills in conservation farming, agroforestry, soil fertility improvement, and efficient water-use practices. To enhance irrigation reliability and reduce dependence on rain fed agriculture, solar-powered irrigation systems are being installed and irrigated on 15 hectares of farmland, enabling increased productivity throughout the year. Farmers have also been trained in post-harvest handling techniques such as grading, sorting, packaging, and proper storage, helping them reduce losses and maintain the quality of their produce for markets. These combined achievements contribute to improved food security, higher household incomes, strengthened cooperative structures, and long-term climate resilience in the Bugesera farming communities
