Project Description

In 2024, REDO, in partnership with AVSI and REMA, launched the project “Improved Green Culture and Climate Change Resilience within Rwandan Rural Communities” in Ruhango District. Over its Three years duration, the project aims to advance afforestation and agroforestry, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve rural livelihoods, and build resilience to climate change. The project focuses on tree planting, community training, and sustainable forestry. By engaging local communities, youth cooperatives, and schools, REDO promotes environmental conservation through a community driven approach. The project has distributed 80,760  trees to 16,152 households, planted 90,22  trees in 13 schools involving over 15,654 students, and planted 78,300 trees along 150 kilometers of roads to prevent soil erosion. Youth cooperatives have played a key role in nursery establishment, tree planting, and raising awareness. They have received specialized training on seedling production, nursery management, and tree planting techniques, with over 148 trainers empowered to support sustainability and long term impact.

Achievements

The project has achieved significant results since its launch in 2024. A total of 85,002 trees were distributed to 16,152 households, exceeding the initial target of 80,760 trees. In partnership with 13 schools, 9,396 trees were planted, actively involving more than 15,654 students in environmental education and action. Along 150 kilometers of roadsides, 78,300 trees were planted to prevent soil erosion and enhance the district’s green landscape. The project successfully established 20 nurseries across three sectors and trained 148 youth cooperative members and community based mobilizers on seedling production, nursery management, and tree planting techniques. Additionally, three youth cooperatives signed collaboration agreements to maintain planted trees, and 332 casual laborers were hired to support maintenance activities such as fencing, watering, and fertilizing. These achievements reflect strong community engagement, capacity building, and tangible progress in restoring the environment and improving climate resilience in Ruhango District.
