Promoting Community and Cultural Based Tourism in the Gishwati- Mukura National Park

Project Description

This project supports the development of community-based tourism (CBT) in the Gishwati-Mukura National Park landscape, aiming to enhance conservation efforts, promote local culture, and improve livelihoods. Implemented by REDO in partnership with REMA, RGB, and RDB, the project focuses on building awareness, providing startup equipment and marketing materials, and strengthening the capacity of community cooperatives to manage tourism businesses sustainably. Special attention is given to gender inclusion and youth participation throughout the implementation.

Achievements

The project successfully promoted five CBT initiatives, surpassing the original target of two. More than 1,200 people participated in awareness campaigns, which fostered strong collaboration among communities, local authorities, and REDO. Three cooperatives received vital startup materials such as fridges, tents, signage, and consumables, significantly improving the quality of services offered at selling points and base camps. Marketing efforts through radio, social media, and platforms like Visit Rwanda enhanced visibility and attracted over 1,000 online followers. REDO also delivered hands-on training to 15 cooperative members on customer care, financial management, and record-keeping. As a result, businesses reported a 30–40% increase in income, improved service delivery, and reduced dependency on donor support. The project empowered cooperatives to independently cover operational costs such as electricity, water, and security, with a positive impact on local tourism and sustainable livelihoods.
