Project Description
Since 2015, REDO has been implementing initiatives to reduce environmental degradation around Nyungwe National Park particularly Cyamudongo Forest by promoting improved cookstoves and alternative livelihoods. With financial support from UNDP/RGB starting in 2020, the project was expanded to further reduce reliance on firewood, decrease illegal tree cutting, and improve energy efficiency in households around the forest. The project aligns with Rwanda’s Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy, the Energy Strategic Plan, and the country’s environmental protection goals. The main interventions included the distribution of energy-efficient cookstoves and the introduction of modern beekeeping practices. These actions were designed to mitigate deforestation, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide income-generating opportunities for local cooperatives. The project targeted vulnerable groups particularly women and youth across Gitambi and Nyakabuye sectors, empowering them through sustainable technologies and training
Achievements
The project exceeded its initial target of 1,000 beneficiaries by reaching 1,777 households, with gender parity in participation. A total of 1,777 improved cookstoves were distributed, replacing traditional three-stone cooking systems. Beneficiaries reported a 40–50% reduction in firewood use and a decrease in cooking time, freeing up time for other economic or educational activities. Two cooperatives (COFABRI and AMAHUMBEZI YA CYAMUDONGO) experienced significant income growth, enabling investment in land and business expansion. Additionally, two beekeeping cooperatives (COPAINYA and BUNGABUNGIBIDUKIKIJE) received 70 modern hives and essential equipment. Honey productivity is expected to quadruple compared to previous methods, and the use of modern tools has greatly improved quality and safety. As a result of these activities, illegal tree cutting in Cyamudongo Forest dropped from 70% to under 20%. The project also achieved increased gender inclusion, with notable rises in both women’s participation in beekeeping and men’s involvement in cookstove production.
