Project Description

REDO, in collaboration with TerraFund, is implementing the “Restoration of Forest Landscape and Livelihoods in Rusizi District” project in Gashonga Sector, Rusizi District. The initiative aims to restore 725 hectares of degraded land through the planting of 150,000 trees using agroforestry practices. It forms part of TerraFund’s broader mission to restore degraded landscapes across Africa, focusing on three key regions: Kenya’s Greater Rift Valley, the Lake Kivu and Rusizi River Basin (which includes Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda), and the Ghana Cocoa Belt. Through this project, REDO seeks to improve ecosystem health, enhance community livelihoods, and strengthen climate resilience within the Lake Kivu and Rusizi River Basin landscape.

Achievements

As of mid-2025, the project has planted 92,545 trees, restored 256 hectares of degraded land, created 308 green jobs, supported eight agricultural cooperatives, and established one tree nursery. These activities have been carried out in the target areas of Rusayo, Kabakobwa, and Buhokoro cells within the Gashonga Sector.
